Pink Lake, Western Australia

Western Australia is home to a number of extraordinary ‘pink lakes’.
Lake Hillier is a pink-coloured lake on Middle Island, the largest of the islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago off the coast of Esperance.
From above the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink. The lake is about 600 meters long, and is surrounded by a rim of sand and dense woodland of paperbark and eucalyptus trees. A narrow strip of sand dunes covered by vegetation separates it from the blue Southern Ocean.
No-one fully knows why the lake is pink. Scientists speculate that the colour comes from a dye created by bacteria that lives in the salt crusts.
Middle Island's pink lake dates back to the journals of explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802. Flinders had climbed Middle Island's highest peak (now known as Flinders Peak) to survey the surrounding waters when he came across the remarkable lake. Middle Island and its pink lake are located in a pristine wilderness. The only way to view this lake is from the air. You can also explore the islands and abundant wildlife of the Recherche Archipelago on a cruise from Esperance.
Pink Lake near Esperance is another pink lake set against a backdrop of some of Australia’s most stunning coastal scenery, seven kilometres from the town of Esperance.
In the right weather conditions, the lake turns a soft shade of pink due to the high concentration of algae in the water. For the best views and excellent take a walk to Pink Lake lookout.
The lake has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because it supports significant numbers of native and migratory birds.
There’s plenty to see and do around Esperance including horse riding, walking and cycling, fishing, scuba diving, whale-watching (May to October), windsurfing, abseiling, kayaking and 4WD drive tours.
The Esperance Museum displays material about the local history, including pioneer memorabilia, shipwreck items, pieces of the US Sky Lab, which fell to earth in the Esperance region in 1980, Aboriginal artefacts and antiques. There is an artificial reef just off the end of the town jetty which is a good spot for fishing or a stroll.
Drive from Esperance west along Twilight Beach Road past West Beach, Chapman's Point, Blue Haven Beach, Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach and Twilight Beach. Walk along the soft, white sands, granite cliffs, and watch the ocean change colour from aquamarine near the shore to a deep blue out near the islands of the Recherche Archipelago.
The sand dunes, pushed to great heights by the wind called the 'Esperance Doctor', rise more than 50 metres high. Head to Rotary Lookout for panoramic views of Esperance, Esperance Bay, Pink Lake and the islands off the coast.
Esperance is also a gateway to Cape Le Grand National Park; Stokes National Park and Cape Arid National Park.
Lake Hillier is a pink-colored lake on Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia. From above the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink. It is such a significant distinguishing feature of the archipelago that air passengers often crane their necks to take a glimpse of it.
The lake is about 600 meters long, and is surrounded by a rim of sand and a dense woodland of paperbark and eucalyptus trees. A narrow strip of sand dunes covered by vegetation separates it to the north from the Southern Ocean.Unlike other pink lakes in the world like the one in Retba and the salt ponds at San Francisco Bay, the pink color of Lake Hillier has not been decisively proved, although it is speculated that the color could arise from a dye created by the organisms Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria. Another hypothesis is that the pink color is due to red halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts. That the color is not a trick of light can be proved by taking water from the lake in a container – the pink color can be found to be permanent.
Whereas the causes behind the unusual coloring of other pink lakes, such as the nearby Pink Lake and Senegal's Lake Retba, have been definitively confirmed, the reason for Lake Hillier's color remains a mystery. Theories abound, of course. Some speculate that Lake Hillier's color,  like that of the other lakes, is the result of high salinity combined with the presence of a salt-loving algae species known as Dunaliella salina and pink bacteria known as halobacteria. Unlike other pink lakes, however, which regularly change colors in accordance with temperature fluctuations, Lake Hillier maintains its pink shade year-round. The water retains its pink hue when bottled.
Whatever the cause, the water does not appear to pose any danger to humans. Though high salt levels might not make for the most comfortable swim, visitors hoping to immerse themselves in Lake Hillier's brilliant pink waters are perfectly safe to do so.
The lake, on Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago, spans only about 600 meters wide but its rose pink colour is unmistakable.
Canada's Dusty Rose Lake, in British Columbia is pink due to the particulate in the glacial melt waters feeding it. The surrounding rock is purple/pink in colour; the water feeding the lake is said to have a lavender hue.
Perhaps the most unusually located pink lakes are in south west Spain, where two large salt-water lakes sit adjacent to the city of Torrevieja.Lake Hillier – without outflow lake located on the Australian island of Middle Recherche Archipelago belonging to a complex of about 100 islands off the south-west. coast of Western Australia, near Cape Arid.
It is a saline lake with a width of about 600 meters from the ocean and separated by a narrow strip of land. It has a shape resembling a footprint from the edge of the forest and is separated by a belt of sand mixed with salt. Is located among forested land and eucalyptus trees of the species Melaleuca leucadendra.
The origins of information about the lake date back to the year 1802. This year, the British explorer Matthew Flinders and hydrograph visited this place in his journey to Sydney. In the early years of the nineteenth century, their settlements were in this place whalers and seal hunters.
Lake is stained to the color pink. The reason for this color has not yet been clarified. This color is permanent, even following the entry of water into a container. In the mid-twentieth century, scientists have studied the composition of water in the lake wanting to find out what causes the lake takes on the color pink. At first it was thought that the color of algae that produce such Dunaliella salina, which produce a red dye, but their conjecture is not confirmed.
In the early years of the twentieth century was mined salt from the lake, but after 6 years of mining operation was abandoned.
On the southern coast of Australia is a group of over 100 islands known as the Recherche Archipelago. On one of these, Middle Island, among the lush forests, is shiny lake. It looks like a giant footprint on the green carpet, surrounded by white sand.
It has 600 m in diameter and is relatively shallow. From the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean is divided by only a narrow strip of scrub, sand dunes and white sand. Once the salt is mined from it, but abandoned it many years ago.
Recherche Archipelago and Lake Hillier were first examined by the expedition of Captain Flinders in 1802.
Lake Hillier sits like a giant punchbowl at the edge of Middle Island in Western Australia's Recherche Archipelago, surrounded by a thick forest of paperbark and eucalyptus trees. A slender strip of shore separates Lake Hillier from the predictably blue Southern Ocean, highlighting the lake's otherworldly appearance.
Theories differ on the origins of the lake's bubblegum hue. Some believe it comes from a dye produced by two microorganisms called Halobacteria and Dunaliella salina, while others suspect the red halophilic bacteria that thrive in the lake's salt deposits. In any case, the lake's color isn't a trick of the light—it's positively pink, no matter where you look. The island and lake are thought to have been first explored by the Flinders expedition in 1802. Captain Flinders is said to have observed the pink lake after ascending the island’s peak. John Thistle, the ships master collected some of the lake’s water which he found to be saturated with salt [2].The reason for the lake’s colour is still under investigation, and so far no one has come up with a reasonable explanation. However, the most probable explanation according to some scientists involves the low nutrient concentrations and different types of bacteria and algae that are responsible for the lake’s pink colour. But there is no traces of algae in the samples of water which is taken from Lake Hillier. The lake is one of the natural wonders of Australia.
Another mysterious work of nature, Lake Hillier is situated in Cape Arid near the southern coast of Western Australia. Cape Arid is famous for its complex of islands that are almost 100 in number, all of these Islands combine together to form Recherche archipelago. This lake is located on one of these islands named Middle Island.
In 1802, a British explorer named Captain Mathew Flinders discovered the lake for the first time. The glittery pink colored lake was observed by him when he ascended one of the island’s highest peaks (named after him as Flinders’ peak), during his journey to Sydney. The ship’s master named, John Thistle was amazed to see the pink colored lake and collected some water that he later found out to be saline in nature.
Surrounding the lake are the lush green forests of eucalyptus trees and a narrow strip of sand dunes that divide it from the blue colored water of the Indian Ocean. It seems like a giant footprint marked in pink color, on a green carpet. This salty lake is 600m in diameter and is not very deep.
What’s fascinating about this lake is its never changing rosy pink color. Even if you draw it in some container the color will stay the same. Since 1950 scientists are making researches to draw a conclusion regarding its pink color. So far many assumptions have been made. Some researchers claim that it is because of the low level of nutrients whereas others say that the pink color is because of the algae and bacteria present in the water. There also some researchers who believe that the salt present in the lake’s water contains within its crust, red colored halophilic bacteria that gives a pink hue to the water.
In early 20th century a salt mining project started on this lake which was abandoned within 6 years. Now you must be thinking whether you can swim in this lake or not. The lake is shallow and you may take a swim in it, but as the lake is located in a remote area it is not advisable for swimming. This bubble gum colored lake is easily visible from the aircrafts that pass by Recherche Archipelago.
Pink appears to be a natural color after all. The lake in the picture is not the victim of an ambitious art project, and no chemicals were used to give the lake this color. It is entirely natural.
The lake is called Hillier Lake, and is located on Middle Island, which is one of the islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago in Australia. Up until this day no one has been able to figure out why the water is pink. It is still under research. Some scientists suggest the lake is this color because the water contains low nutrient concentrations, and several bacteria and algae that require a high concentration of salt. The lake's water is known to be extremely salty. Still, as of yet, no research has been able to confirm this.
Lake Hillier is not the only pink lake in the world. There is at least one more, which is called Lake Retba, and lies to the east of the capital Dakar, Senegal. Like Hillier, high concentrations of salt have been found in Lake Retba.
No tourism is possible here as it is prohibited to set foot on Middle Island. Therefore, Lake Hillier can only be admired from the sky, and it often is, as it is not uncommon for travelers to notice the lake as they fly over it on their way to other destinations.
